Time and Colours

Yesterday, after my lecture in Osaka, I visited a museum not far from the lecture venue. The museum, which was built relatively recently, was holding two exhibitions, one focusing on a local female artist from Osaka, and the other on Monet, one of the leading impressionist painters. The theme of the exhibition was his trajectory leading up to “Water Lilies” in the last room. What interested me about the exhibition was not so much the parts that were painted (that is, in the series of Waterlilies), but the ‘margins’ of the painting, which were clearly left out. This was a great discovery for me. Or another point, his admiration for seascapes as he moves between Normandy, Brittany and the Mediterranean. As a photographer who has been photographing seascapes for many years, I felt a renewed empathy with his trajectory. I believe that by visiting the same places and seeing the same seascapes over and over again, he has received ‘colours’ from nature. What he could only see if he stayed there continuously, in other words ‘time’, showed him ‘colours’.
He relentlessly pursued that time. I think it was in “Water Lilies” and in his post-World War I works that this turned into his real creation. While he is losing his sight, the colours emerge in his inner world. The memory of the sea, time and colour overlap with his own. That ‘margin’ is proof of his creation, a confirmation of it.

Okinawa

Last weekend, I went to Okinawa with my daughter.
It was for the ‘Okinawa Ceramic Art Exhibition’ held at the Naha Culture and Arts Theatre and the Naha City Tsuboya Pottery Museum.
It was a joint exhibition of works by one of the artists I most admire, ceramic artist Jissei Omine, and his disciples.
The work ‘Katachi’ (my daughter was fascinated by this work), which trembled and tried to move, and ‘Izumi’, which erupted from the earth. An overwhelming group of works in which powerful, imaginative landscapes emerge before your eyes.
With this feeling, I visited Omine’s studio in Yomitan Village, pottery sanctuary.
When I spoke to Mr.Omine last year, he told me that this might be his last exhibition, but when I met him again, he was in very good health and working on a large piece of pottery in his studio (he said “I’m just playing with the clay”) and I spent a very happy time with my daughter.
I printed his portrait that I took last year in my darkroom. It was nice to be able to give him that photo with my thanks.
A small ‘Genki Dama’ (pottery made from a mixture of Okinawan soil and silica sand collected from uplifted reefs), which had just come out of the kiln, was presented to us, and this made my daughter, who had been feeling a little under the weather the day before, feel completely better.
On the last day, the sky was clear and the East China Sea was bright and clear. The blue colour created by Mr.Omine remains in my heart.

Autumn sky

Flying west from Tokyo Haneda Airport, depending on my destination, I can clearly see my house at the foot of the Miura Peninsula from my cabin window.
Some routes seem to fly directly over my house.
Today I watched the plane fly over from the roof.
It felt like another me was looking down from the window of that plane.
A beautiful autumn sky.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona for the second time this year. And after a year’s absence, I’m back in this city.
This is the global centre of the Fab City. The data-in, data-out social production model is a pioneering experimental urban model of ‘Marxist deconstruction’ and ‘decommunism’ that has attracted much interest in recent years. Research into urban innovation continues.
By the way, my Leica M6 has been sent to a factory in Germany for a second overhaul. This time its partner is the M4 after 20 years, but the design is excellent. Exposure is taken by intuition. (The photos here were taken with an iphone.)

To the Lolland, Denmark.

Research on urban innovation, the third country visited this year is Copenhagen, Denmark. Wellbeing, home of the Vikings, rock festivals as a city in disguise, reinstatement of the social corporative model and a testing ground for a new ecological autonomous district after Christiania, a recycling city….. More portraits for the project Transit are still to be taken.

Documentary video about the City of Barcelona, Spain.

I have been visiting the city of Barcelona for the past few years. There is much to learn from the city’s efforts towards a post-capitalist society across the pandemic. In February this year, I revisited the city with a videography crew, and finally produced a 20-minute documentary film.
